Hi, I'm James Scurlock

I attended Lakeside High School and then the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar. I made my first documentary in 2003, which I sold to HBO and some other TV stations around the world. Several more documentaries followed, as did four books.

It's great to meet you!

A Little About Myself

I attended Lakeside High School and then the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania as a Benjamin Franklin Scholar. While in college, I started a restaurant company, becoming one of the first developers of what is now Boston Market. After the company went public, I sold my restaurants and began consulting for several clients in the food business, as well as publishing the Restaurant Marketing newsletter. After segueing into magazine writing, I made my first documentary in 2003, which I sold to HBO and some other TV stations around the world. Several more documentaries followed, as did four books, the first two for Simon & Schuster (Scribner) and Harper Collins. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, I began publishing The Intelligent Newsletter on Substack. I live in Winter Park with my dog and partner of 10 years. We listen to as much music as possible, cook and travel when it gets hot! I personally curate my dog’s IG and YouTube channels, which have racked up 50,000 followers @bigworldsmalldogs.

Fun fact: I’m the youngest franchisee of Subway Sandwiches in history. I was also one of the first developers of Boston Chicken, now Boston Market.

Thanks for stopping by! Let’s communicate soon!
